Simplicity 1080

Everybody calls Simplicity 1080 “granny chic.” I decided, therefore, to attempt “goth granny chic.” Okay, I totally fell in love with this quilting cotton line and decided to say screw it to everyone who tells you not to sew clothes with quilting cotton. So this is made with Beacon Hall line of quilting cotton.

I mostly followed the instructions pretty closely for finishing the seams. The main departure, as you can see, was binding the neckline rather than folding it under. The neck was already a bit wide and I liked how this echoed the binding on the pockets anyway.

Other changes I made were to lower the pleats and add black eyelet lace trim to the bottom.

I really agonized over what size to make this–I was firmly in the medium range based on my bust size, but so often these patterns end up huge on me (pattern has too much ease + I have narrow shoulders). Most reviews said the straight size was good, but a few mentioned that the dress ended up tentlike. So I bit the bullet and made a small. I’m happy with it! I think definitely the shoulders would’ve been too wide on the medium.

Cream Floral Lady Skater

Finally! This one has been on my do-to list for MONTHS. Fabric is Plum Gray Rose Floral on Taupe Cotton Jersey Knit Fabric from Girl Charlee.

It’s a bit thin, so I think if I were to use it again I’d just use it for a top. Changes I made from my usual Lady Skater are:

  • 3/4-length sleeves w/ ruffle
  • slight V-neck
  • ruffle + eyelet lace added to bottom

The brown ruffle peeking out below the white eyelet is my brown petticoat skirt. Since the fabric is thin, I’m expecting to wear this layered.

The sleeve ruffles are circular ruffles and hemmed with a narrow hem on my serger. The V-neck is made by just sewing a wedge in the center front of the neckband.

White Petticoat Skirt

Another project done! I actually had a white petticoat skirt I made a couple of years ago, but there were some issues with it so it was axed in the great purge. This is the replacement!

IMG_4841

As with most of my (non-historical) petticoat skirts, this is a half circle skirt with a ruffle. I had a lot of extra fabric, so I added a second ruffle above the bottom one. Waistband is just elastic. Fabric is white cotton lawn.

The neat thing on this one is that I hemmed the ruffles with a narrow hem on my serger. Takes forever, but it looks so good! I almost didn’t add lace to the bottom because I liked how clean it looked. But of course in the end I couldn’t resist.

Check out my awesome “vintage” 1980s Gunne Sax dress, haha.
